Atlantic Piedmont and Coastal Plain

Even in the oppressive summer months, the Atlantic Coast offers some of the southeast's best photography.  The magic light of morning and evening is far easier to photograph over open beaches and harbors than on forested mountain peaks, although colors aren't always as intense at sea level.  Cloudy days bring out the best of maritime forests and swamps, which survive in pockets throughout the region.  South Carolina's Congaree Swamp deserves special mention as the largest tract of old-growth forest east of the Mississippi, and the barrier islands of South Carolina and Georgia offer some of the finest beaches in the region.
